H. B. Zachry Company

As a Zachry employee, Doug defined, developed, implemented and supported enterprise level LAN based database applications for tracking and reporting construction projects.  ZIPS (Zachry Interfaced Progress System) and ZDCS (Zachry Document Control System) were the two primary systems that Doug built from the ground up while at Zachry.

ZIPS uses an earned value approach to monitor and control project progress and performance.  Work is broken down into detailed items which are easily monitored for progress, thereby providing accurate information to the management team for effective control of costs and schedule.  Multiple breakdown structures are used to monitor individual work items and then summarize the work to higher levels for various reporting and analysis functions.  Performance evaluation and forecasting are performed at the cost code level in the ZMIS (Zachry Managagement Information System) accounting system.  Work package planning and QA/QC inspections were also incorporated into the progress measurement process.

Technologies incorporated for an integrated solution include:

Microsoft Visual FoxPro - Primary database and desktop application for all LAN users.
Microsoft FrontPage - Primary web design tool for online help system.
Lotus 1-2-3.
WordPerfect.
Microsoft Windows for WorkGroups 3.11 and Windows 95.
Novell network.
Caere Cardiff OCR software with high capacity scanners.
Importation of data from various ongoing sources (engineers, fabricators, suppliers, etc.).
Interfacing with corporate LAN based cost accounting and reporting system.
Interfacing with project schedules by activity and work package.
Interfacing with corporate LAN based materials management system.
